CENTRAL OREGON WRITERS GUILD ANNOUNCES REDMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT’S 2013 4th GRADE BOOK CONTEST

                  

Redmond, OR, October 3, 2012—In partnership with the High Desert Society of the Arts, Redmond Rotary Club and Redmond Library, Central Oregon Writers Guild is proud to sponsor the annual Redmond School District’s 4th Grade Book Contest.


The contest is open to Redmond School District 4th grade students, including those who attend Christian schools and home schooled students who are at the 4th grade level. Rules governing the contest have been distributed to district administrators, principals and the 4th grade teachers who will coordinate the students’ participation. Home schoolers should contact Kai Strand for entry details, at kaistrand@yahoo.com or 541-410-3225. Local businesses or organizations that would like to provide financial support for contest expenses should also contact Ms. Strand. Participation in this important event is welcome!


HDSA and Central Oregon Writers Guild members are available to make classroom presentations to offer students guidance as they write and illustrate their contest entries. Books must be the child’s original work. Entry deadline is January 24, 2013. The winner and runner-up will be announced February 20, 2013, and all submissions will be available for viewing during the contest awards ceremony and reception at Redmond Library in March.

Deep River Books Writers Contest

Deep River Books is excited to announce their 2011-12 Writers Contest. Editorial Director Kit Tosello sent this information for us to share: 
 
This year we are offering two royalty-based publishing contracts -- to the grand prize winner in both the Fiction and NonFiction categories of our 2011 Deep River Books Writer's Contest. The contest began November 1; submissions will be accepted through January 15th, 2012. 
 
Deep River Books is based in Camp Sherman, so we'd be tickled if one of this year's winners were to come out of our own region. As a small Christian publishing house, our focus is on mentoring, publishing and helping to launch talented new authors.

Approaching Deadline for Annual Literary Harvest

Deadline for the Central Oregon Writers Guild’s annual Literary Harvest Writing Contest is near: September 6, 2011. You may submit your entry at our August 25th meeting or mail it to:

The contest is open to Guild members and Central Oregon writers who reside in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. Genres include fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, humor, poetry and excerpts from stand-alone book chapters. Entry fee is $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Deadline for entries is September 6, 2011, and they are not accepted online. A panel of local judges will select ten winners, who will read their entries at the Literary Harvest on Friday, October 14, 2011.

Haunted Astoria Seeks Haunted Stories

ASTORIA, OR – A new element of this year's Haunted Astoria event includes a short-story writing contest. There will be prizes for winners and the opportunity to read your story at the Open Mic Haunted Tales session taking place the evening of Saturday, October 24 at Pier 11 Steakhouse Restaurant. Stories should be no more than 1500 words. The genre is horror fiction that incorporates true facts or myths about Astoria and its intriguing heritage. First place winners receive $75, Second place winners receive $50 and third place winners receive $25. Pier 11 Steakhouse will also be providing gift certificates.

Haunted Astoria made its debut last fall with tours of local historic sites, a movie at Liberty Theater, psychic and paranormal fair at Pier 11, and an open mic session of ghost stories at a local restaurant. The fun continues in 2009 on Saturday, October 24, with added venues, a writing contest, and special underground tours of Liberty Theater and Clatsop County Heritage Museum.

Following Haunted Astoria, Talking Tombstones takes place on Sunday, October 25 – a hugely popular annual event presented by Clatsop County Historical Society at a different cemetery each year. Haunted Astoria is a collaborative effort produced by Astoria Sunday Market, Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce, Clatsop County Historical Society, and Liberty Theater. 2008 Oregon Book Awards Winners!


Literary Arts is pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 Oregon Book Awards. From nearly 125 entries, the seven winners were announced by Oregon author John Daniel to a sold-out crowd of more than 500 people on Sunday, November 9 at the Portland Art Museum. In addition, special awards were presented to Barry Lopez of Finn Rock, Marlene Howard of Portland and Young Writers Association of Eugene for outstanding contributions to Oregon's literary community.

The Nature of Words Announces Winners of Rising Star Creative Writing Competition

Bend, Oregon. September 30, 2008. With the observation, "There's a constant sense of rejecting the status quo, answering the call to adventure, leaving the safe known world behind", the judges for The Nature of Words Rising Star Creative Writing Competition have chosen the winning entries from high school- and college-age writers for 2008. More than 100 submissions in literary non-fiction, fiction and poetry were received from throughout Oregon, Idaho and Washington.

Honorable mention winners will receive a gift certificate. All winning and honorable mention submissions will be published in an anthology available for purchase at all festival venues.

2008 Pitch Perfect Contest


2008 Pitch Perfect Contest (electronic contest)
Sponsored by the Mid-Willamette Valley RWA

The purpose of the Pitch Perfect Contest is to help polish your pitching package by judging a long synopsis, short synopsis and query letter. Synopses aren't the more interesting and entertaining part of the writing process, but they are necessary. With more and more agents and editors requesting these, it's crucial to be able to write them well. This contest is a wonderful way to get feedback on your synopsis and have the opportunity to get it in front of and agent or editor.

Not to mention the grand prize is FREE REGISTRATION TO RWA NATIONAL 2009 in Washington D.C.!

Eligibility
This contest is open to all members of the Romance Writers of America®, to both unpublished and published members. Published members cannot submit a query letter or synopsis used for a published book or a manuscript that has been sold to an RWA-recognized publisher. This contest only accepts entries on unpublished and unsold manuscripts.

MWV RWA reserves the right to limit the number of entries based on judge availability. If the contest reaches capacity, it will be announced on the contest Web site and any entries that come in after closure will be returned.

Entry Fees & Submissions
The entry fee is $20, or $15 for MWV RWA chapter members. You do not have to be a member of RWA to enter. To enter, you must send a one-page query letter, short synopsis (1-3 pages) and long synopsis (4-10 pages).
