Jessica Morrell to Conduct Narrative Nonfiction Workshop

Portland author and writing instructor Jessica Morrell will conduct a workshop, Narrative Nonfiction:

Date: Saturday, March 15, 2008
Location: PNCA, 1241 N.W. Johnson, Portland
Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $75

Narrative nonfiction reads like fiction but is loyal to facts and truth. But it has something more--a bit of magic, the poetry of beautifully written sentences, and thoughtful explorations of themes. This workshop will explain how a memoir or essay uses novelistic techniques to shape reality on the page. Exercises and discussion will cover voice, structure, narrative techniques and how to create nonfiction that 'leaves a trace' of the writer behind the words. We'll discuss how our pasts and passions shape our sensibilities and understanding and how narrative nonfiction bridges connections between events that have taken place and imbues them with meaning and emotion. We'll also be analyzing the narrative methods used in This Boys' Life by Tobias Wolff, Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Wells. Additionally, we'll read together several essays by Poe Ballantine and analyze his voice and methods. Comprehensive materials and examples will be provided to enhance the discussion and provide inspiration for further practice.

Workshop topics include:
* How to find the right form for the story, essay, memoir, or biography.
* Cultivating your natural writing voice.
* Adding fictional elements such as setting details, anecdotes, character development, conflict, and dialogue to create an effective narrative.
* When to use scene and when to use summary.
* How to find themes in your life story.
* Crafting essays that deliver both emotion and information.

Jessica Morrell's workshops are lively, focused and filled with sensible insights. She is the author of several books about writing and she hosts a web site, www.writing-life.com.
