Upon retirement, Bill Birnbaum and his equally adventurous wife applied to join the
Peace Corps. When the Peace Corps’ medical department rejected his application, the
Birnbaum’s sold their home, put everything they owned in storage, and purchased oneway
tickets to Arequipa, Peru. They searched for, and found, their own volunteer
opportunities in a poor community in the Peruvian Andes. Adventurous? Certainly, but
typical for a fellow who’s spent a lifetime looking for adventure.
In his memoir, Bill tells of his various adventures from his mischievous boyhood to his
mountain climbing adulthood. And he relates his lessons learned along the way. He
notes that we citizens of modern society are too damn busy. And, at times, we’re
concerned about things which aren’t important at all. He also tells of his own personal
experience, far from home and family, on the morning of September 11, 2001.
